Bitcoin and Blockchain: What's the difference?

Sumber artikel disusun oleh: Bahagian Data Strategik Dan Teknologi Masa Hadapan, Kementerian Tenaga, Sains, Teknologi, Alam Sekitar Dan Perubahan Iklim (MESTECC).

The Confusion

Are Bitcoin and blockchain the same thing? No, they aren’t. However, they are closely related. When Bitcoin was released as open source code, blockchain was wrapped up together with it in the same solution. And since Bitcoin was the first application of blockchain, people often inadvertently used “Bitcoin” to mean blockchain. That’s how the misunderstanding started. Blockchain technology has since been extrapolated for use in other industries, but there is still some lingering confusion.

Thank you.

Trading Agricultural Commodity using Blockchain

Sumber artikel disusun oleh: Bahagian Data Strategik Dan Teknologi Masa Hadapan, Kementerian Tenaga, Sains, Teknologi, Alam Sekitar Dan Perubahan Iklim (MESTECC).

The Inspiration

Trade commodity and finance is still based on the exchange of paper documents and processes that haven’t changed much since the foundation of trader Dutch East India Company in 1602. On average, it will take 11-14 days to complete a commodity transaction from buyer to seller with high risk of fraud and human errors and also costly.

How It Works

Through the digitisation of documents (contracts, letters of credit as well as government inspections and certifications) and blockchain technology, all parties involved in the transactions (buyer, seller, bank, government agencies) are able to complete the transaction within 4 days with cost reduction between 25 to 30%.

The Future of Shoes Designs (and the fashion industry)

Sumber artikel disusun oleh: Bahagian Data Strategik Dan Teknologi Masa Hadapan, Kementerian Tenaga, Sains, Teknologi, Alam Sekitar Dan Perubahan Iklim (MESTECC).

The Inspiration
To empower anyone to be an artist and express themselves through technology. The company (ShiftWear) intention was to let people to have their own customized product suited to their personal preferences, without the current limitations which exist in the market.

How It Works
Put e-paper* displays on both sides of sneakers and let users’ and designers’ creative juices flow. Changing what’s on display is as easy as changing your smartphone’s wallpaper, using a smartphone app to let users select their desired design, either of their own making or from a marketplace. The built-in batteries will last up to 30 days, depending on the type of visuals you display.
Not only can you be up-to-date with current fashion or making your own fashion statement, you could earn money simply by being a walking advertisement ‘panel’ in the future.

* E-paper or e-ink is a great technology for low-power screens that are also eye-friendly because of how little energy they consume to maintain the image currently on their display. The Gif attachment shows how the design changes on the shoe itself.

Horizontal Housing: The Future of Sustainable Housing

Sumber artikel disusun oleh: Bahagian Data Strategik Dan Teknologi Masa Hadapan, Kementerian Tenaga, Sains, Teknologi, Alam Sekitar Dan Perubahan Iklim (MESTECC).

Artikel FT Sharing

The Inspiration
The Interlace breaks away from Asia’s standard typology of isolated, vertical apartment towers and instead explores a dramatically different approach to tropical living: an expansive interconnected network of living and communal spaces integrated with the natural environment. Thirty-one apartment blocks, each six-stories tall and identical in length, are stacked in a hexagonal arrangement to form eight large-scale open and permeable courtyards. The interlocking blocks form a vertical village with cascading sky gardens and both private and public roof terraces.

How It Works
The design capitalizes on the generous size of the site and further maximizes the presence of nature by introducing extensive roof gardens, landscaped sky terraces and cascading balconies. Above- ground vehicular circulation is minimized, liberating large green areas within the development. The Interlace incorporates sustainability features through careful environmental analysis of sun, wind, and micro-climate conditions on site and the integration of low-impact passive energy strategies.

Artificial Pancreas

Sumber artikel disusun oleh: Bahagian Data Strategik Dan Teknologi Masa Hadapan, Kementerian Tenaga, Sains, Teknologi, Alam Sekitar Dan Perubahan Iklim (MESTECC).

Artikel FT Sharing

The Inspiration
I originally wanted to build a better system  on my Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) to wake me up at night. I knew that if I could get the data from my CGM in real-time, I could send data to my phone or computer to make louder alarms than was possible on the existing medical device. Once I did that, I realized I wanted to share my data with others, and added buttons to prevent waking up unnecessarily if I was taking action (thus only alarming myself if I wasn’t waking up to take action).

How It Works
Once I was entering data about actions I was taking, the next obvious step was building a prediction algorithm to make the alarms smarter. This enabled the system to only alarm if I needed to take additional action, rather than being purely reactive and alarming without the context of other data, which is still currently the standard of diabetes care today. And a year later, we realized that combining our algorithm with other open source code to communicate and send commands directly to the pump would enable us to “close the loop”. That’s how I went from building a system to better wake me up at night to building an artificial pancreas system that allows me to sleep without having to wake up and take action for diabetes.
