The Skyscraper Elevator of the Future

The Inspiration
Elevators have allowed humans to expand ever-closer to the skies since the first passenger elevator was installed in 1857. Since then the technology has grown, and new types of elevators are on the horizon. However, conventional elevators only go up and down and the taller the building, the more shafts you need and the more space you will waste. Standard elevators also limit skyscrapers’ functionality, design and shape.

A new system invented and being tested would get rid of cables altogether and build elevators more like magnetic levitation trains.

How It Works

The elevator cabins work on a set of track much like a train system, and while the cabins themselves are smaller and slower than a traditional lift system, the capability for multiple cabins on the same track mean really short waiting times. When it wants to move horizontally a section of track rotates and the cabin goes sideways. (For better understanding, click here).

    Transporting multiple cabins in a single shaft, both vertically and horizontally bring multiple advantages including:
  • Increasing a building’s leasable space by up to 25%; 
  • Increase in transport capacity by up to 50% as well as reducing waiting times for passengers; and 
  • Reduce energy costs of buildings by incorporating a system that reduces peak power demand by up to 60%.

Horizontal Housing: The Future of Sustainable Housing

The Inspiration
The Interlace breaks away from Asia’s standard typology of isolated, vertical apartment towers and instead explores a dramatically different approach to tropical living: an expansive interconnected network of living and communal spaces integrated with the natural environment. Thirty-one apartment blocks, each six-stories tall and identical in length, are stacked in a hexagonal arrangement to form eight large-scale open and permeable courtyards. The interlocking blocks form a vertical village with cascading sky gardens and both private and public roof terraces.

How It Works
The design capitalizes on the generous size of the site and further maximizes the presence of nature by introducing extensive roof gardens, landscaped sky terraces and cascading balconies. Above- ground vehicular circulation is minimized, liberating large green areas within the development. The Interlace incorporates sustainability features through careful environmental analysis of sun, wind, and micro-climate conditions on site and the integration of low-impact passive energy strategies.

Growing Cement Bricks With Bacteria

The Inspiration
While working for an architectural firm in 2005, Ginger Krieg Dosier (CEO BioMason) was tasked with looking into green alternatives for building materials. When it came to brick and masonry, her searches came up empty (on average, fabrication of bricks emit over 800 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide annually). She then compared the fabrication of bricks to how the sea shell and coral grow underwater that could withstand water and erosion. This comparison blossomed into a way to grow cement and concrete bricks without emitting carbon dioxide.

How It Works
Every bricks starts with sand packed into rectangular molds. The molds are then inoculated with bacteria, which wrap themselves around the grains of sand. With each bacteria covered grain of sand acting as a nucleus, calcium carbonate crystals begin to form around it. An irrigation system feeds the bricks nutrient rich water over the course of several days to facilitate the process. The crystals grow larger and larger, filling in the gaps between the grains of sand. After three to five days, the bricks are ready for use.



Advantages of using bio-bricks includes:
  • Made in ambient temperatures, no CO2 emissions, minimal dependancy on natural fossil fuels, and can be made on site.
  • No waste in manufacturing.
  • Environmetal points.
  • Product customization.
  • Additive material performance such as increased insulation.
  • Nutrients and minerals required in the process are obtained from natural resources, but may also be extracted from industrial waste streams.
