ASEAN Astronomy Workshop for Teachers (AAWT)

ASEAN Astronomy Workshop for Teachers (AAWT)

Facebook Notes: ASEAN Astronomy Workshop For Teachers

Welcome to ASEAN Astronomy Workshop for Teachers (AAWT)
Date: 26 – 28 December 2019
Venue: Scholar’s Inn, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, Johor, MALAYSIA

SECTION A: INFO

AAWT is a regional workshop for teachers from South East Asia countries (ASEAN).

This workshop is designed to promote astronomy teaching for secondary school science teachers in ASEAN and to bring the basic observational tools of Astronomy closer to them.

AAWT is designing to support the International Astronomical Union (IAU), 100 years of the anniversary (IAU100).

The speciality of this workshop is it is held in conjunction with Annular Solar Eclipse on 26 December 2019.

This 3-day workshop (26-28 December 2019) will hold up to 30 participants and will feature talks, hands-on activities such as telescope demonstrations and observations (day and night).

Apart from that, this workshop would also introduce and demonstrate opportunities to use robotic observatories in this region.

These teachers hands-on training will aim at upgrading the skills, teaching tools and aids of these teachers, equipping them with an innovative and simple method of teaching and learning.

The immediate targeted impact is they can spread knowledge to their colleagues at their home countries, which can be used at their respective schools.

Secondly, this workshop will allow the participants to use and exchange ideas when using other robotic observatories in the region.

With this arrangement, the final beneficiaries will be the students in the region.

AAWT COMMITTEE

AAWT is governed by four committees to support the execution of AAWT as follows:
  1. Steering Committee chaired by Dr. Mazlan Othman, International Science Council, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ISC-ROAP);
  2. International Scientific Advisory Committee co-chaired by Dr. Hakim Luthfi Malasan (Bosscha Observatory, Indonesia) and Prof. Dr. Hassan Abu Kassim (Universiti Malaya)
  3. Programme Committee chaired by Dr. Nor Sakinah Mohammad (UKM)
  4. Technical Committee chaired by Dr. Othman Zainon (UTM).

SECTION D: 2019 ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE PROGRAMME

The annular solar eclipse phenomenon will occur on 26 December 2019.

Its shadow in Malaysia falls on two interesting areas:

  • Tanjung Piai, Johor in Peninsular Malaysia and
  • Batang Ai, Sarawak where the duration of eclipse is longest in Malaysia.

26 DECEMBER 2019 ANNULAR ECLIPSE GLOBAL PATH AND PARAMETERS

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth.

Unfortunately, not every eclipse of the Sun is a total eclipse. Sometimes, the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun's, blocking most but not all of the Sun's light, causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring).

An annular eclipse appears as a partial eclipse over a region of the Earth thousands of kilometers wide.

The global visibility of the 26 December 2019 annular solar eclipse is shown in the Figure 2 (Espanak, 1987; Almanac, 2018).

The eclipse begins at Saudi Arabia, and ends at the Northern Mariana Islands. Table 1 shows the data on circumstances of the eclipse.

ECLIPSE PARAMETERS AT TANJUNG PIAI

The greatest eclipse point is at Sumatera where the duration of annular solar eclipse is 3 minutes 39.5 seconds.

Tanjung Piai, Johor is at the northern edge of annular solar path. Because of this, the duration of eclipse is 2 minutes 31.8 seconds.

Table 2 shows that the annular eclipse begins at Tanjung Piai at 13:21:03.7 (Malaysia standard time). Meanwhile, the time for maximum eclipse is 13:22:19.5 for Tanjung Piai.
